This is r/nyc. Like everyday.
I wish I saw this before the spoiler. Thank you for doing this though. Save everyone else from scumbags of the internet.
Thank you. It's literally an hour and a half till my show. Getting spoiled at this point would be...less than ideal.
I hope you managed to see it without having it spoiled!
I did. But even if I hadn't, it's enough of an experience on its own that it might not even have mattered. It's...perfect.
I playfully asked a friend of mine if I could spoil it for him (obviously would have not have) and he said he was too excited he wouldn't care because he'd still watch it.
I wish I would have gotten tickets for today... The internet is a fucking minefield right now. Already came across one spoiler earlier, I think I'll just stay blackout drunk until I see it on Sunday.
Honestly. I stayed away from all tech after its release and then watched it alone at 8am. So much fear!!
The net is dark and full of spoilers .
You're a good man.
Fucking upvote for you sir. Thank you for this.
Nothing beats it. I love and miss New York so much
Edit: I moved to New Hampshire after living in jersey my whole life. I loved living in jersey city & working in New York for my early 20s. It just got too hard to afford and maintain a healthy lifestyle but it was the most fun.
Crap, wrote this above before checking to see if someone had commented on this. Just seeing those seats...
Holy shit, someone praising life in New York?!
the second you leave NYC it becomes the greatest place on earth
I think it usually builds gradually, with ex New Yorkers having various gripes to explain why they left (which usually boil down to them not being rich enough to have a high standard of living there, or young enough to deal with roommates and appreciate nightlife). But as they settle in to their new home they start to notice all the NYC things it doesn't have, and build up a litany of criticisms of the place (that actually apply to pretty much everywhere in the world that's not NYC), and increasingly start annoying everyone by telling them how much better NYC is than where they live now.
To be fair, similar things happen with other large expensive cities like San Francisco. Living in a very nice but small city, I get annoyed with the number of people expressing surprise that it doesn't have some of the amenities of a city 50x larger or more. What were you expecting, and how is that a fair criticism?
Well, I currently live in Saratoga. I grew up in NJ, then Queens during high school. I gotta say - the women here in Saratoga are ridiculously beautiful. God, the girls here are so hot. the weather is amazing, ya go on a hike and it's breathtaking. The Adirondacks are incredible. Snowboarding is awesome in the winter. I'm like an hour away from some of the best mountains on the east coast. Rent is cheap. The hobos and the cops are nice. It doesn't smell like piss anywhere. Everyone is attractive and fit and they all got cute dogs. the bars only serve craft beer... but its like a twilight zone episode here. I still miss Queens.
I miss the bodega cats and breakfast sandwiches, the smell of piss in midtown and the sound of trains. bagels were good. pot dealers would deliver to your pad and would always have some real dank shit and edibles. My aunts, uncles, cousins, and my grandma are still in Queens or Brooklyn. you could wake up hung over, get a loosy cigarette and brown bag a 40 and just hang on your buddy's stoop and nobody would look twice at you. Anyone I knew with an above ground pool and a charcoal grill would have a bbq as soon as the weather got warm and the whole block would turn out. The dive bars were actual shit holes. There are still heavy metal bars and punk clubs all over the city. I was within 3 blocks of dank ramen, falafel, pizza, all you can eat sushi, McD's, White Castle, and a jewish deli. I even miss that crazy lady around the corner who shouted obscenities at people on the street while smoking from her window.
As soon as I get the opportunity, im going right the fuck back to Ridgewood and hopefully I'll never leave.
I never lived in NY, but dear God I would love to live there now after reading your comment.
I’m upstate, too. Lived in Queens for ten years. Love the cacophonous racket of nature and the beautiful mountains, but I miss walking to the bodega, too. And great diners, the Mets, and just driving to the beach.
What the fuck I moved out of Ridgewood 5 years ago, it has motherfucking ramen now??
actually, to give you an update - I think the White Castle closed up shop. but yeah. there's this crazy good ramen spot - if I remember correctly, it's near wyckoff and myrtle next to a dollar tree.... I think? they stayed open till 2am so the only time I ever went there, I was very inebriated.
increasingly start annoying everyone by telling them how much better NYC is than where they live now.
I didnt realize I was doing this when I went to college in 2008 in Ohio. Once I realized it I felt so bad.
I left NYC because the dating scene was brutal. Didn’t want to end up an old maid. I love my new city (Tel Aviv) and miss NYC so so much, but I never want to move back. Not sure if I view it as the greatest city ever, but it absolutely has something special no where else has.
San Francisco doesn't have a 24hr subway system and it upsets me :( The weather is better than NYC though, so hear I am.
Most people who hate New York City and leave realize they actually hated their job.
Because even if you consider leaving, you think "Shit. Where would I go?"
Probably because the work culture in NYC sucks ass
I misread this as a diss.
As in I read it as I’m the sole person responsible that nyc isn’t the greatest place on Earth and will be once I left.
I was like damn what did I do to deserve this. I don’t even live there
That's literally all they do... wait are you joking?
I remember when I was a kid a camera crew stopped a person at random and asked him "what do you think of New York?" with the expectation that he would praise it.
New Yorkers have their heads so far up their own asses that they make Texans look humble.
Everyone who ever left New York online always says how the city is a cesspool, full of arrogant assholes, horrible traffic and major homeless and crime, and to top it off, its absurdly expensive to live there.
People who currently live in New York are iconic for their defence of the cities issues.
So.. the people who don't like it leave, and the people who do like it stay.
So I know this is just kinda going to confirm what you just said about New Yorkers defending the city but NYC is among the safest big cities in the country. Even anecdotally, there are only a few neighborhoods I wouldn't feel ok about walking around in. Can't say the same about KC, LA, Chicago, Baltimore, Cleveland, etc...
Haha, so true.
My experience living in NYC goes totally against what you are saying.
And i was born in Texas , so i guess I would be in good place to judge that.
Every body in every state does that. NY is on the east coast and is the largest city, so naturally NY will get more attention.
And that guy was referring to the diversity (based on the pic). Seeing all this culture and diversity makes me happy. It's great seeing life outside of your own bubble.
I mean even the complaints are lowkey praise. Everyone who lives in New York loves the fact that they live in New York and can have metropolitan complaints about living in the big city. Speaking as someone who's guilty of the same thing on occasion.
"New York i love you, but you're bringing me down..."
im living upstate currently. everyone is outdoorsy and everyone looks like they should be in an LL Bean or Subaru advertisement and its beautiful and green out here and everyone is attractive but god damn I miss Queens.
I occasionally miss upstate summers. I'm in Texas now and have trouble remembering what a mild summer is like
New York is the greatest city on earth, and I love every second of it.
But I also miss home, and can’t wait to leave
You clearly haven’t been to Tokyo. Another amazing city but the culture shock and language barrier prevent most foreigners from experiencing it to its fullest
As someone who has lived in NY and visited tokyo, they both have their ups and downs, excluding language barrier, i would rather work in NY then tokyo, but as for visiting, tokyo is better imo. Though to be honest, you would visit the two cities for different reasons, so it is personal preference.
I feel like if you're a social person you will like tokyo less, people keep to them selfs, specially if you're a foreigner, even if you know Japanese. Only really a negative if you are a social person. And if you are a foreigner you might face racism (Not name calling racism, but some places do deny services to non-japanese, even if you can speak japanese). Personally i haven't ran into this, though that might be because i was always with a Japanese friend, but I've had other friends who had faced this.
I really do love Tokyo, but Seoul is a better city to visit if you are looking for sociable interactions, koreans are more likely to know english and lots of them are willing to speak to foreigners. I've spent less time visiting Seoul but had more way interactions then i did in Tokyo. Korean food is also just really good.
Yeah that’s true. I’ve been to Tokyo a dozen times or so (I live in Japan currently so that’s easy), and people do keep to themselves but I’m not a social butterfly so that works for me haha. In terms of things you can do/experience I’m not sure which would be more “fun” but I have a ton of fun every time I go to Tokyo. One thing I will say is true, Tokyo is a far cleaner city than New York. There’s hardly any trash in the streets for a city as massive as it is
Yeah Tokyo is a great city for sure, I personally plan on visiting again. There is more stuff to do in Tokyo then NY i would say, you can spend a month in tokyo and still find new stuff to do, which is great. And yeah tokyo being very clean and majority of people being polite makes the general experience a lot better.
It reminds me of that pic that backfired a couple years ago: the trans woman sitting next to the fully covered Muslim in peace and the caption from an angry reactionary was “this is the future liberals want” and it blew up because, yes, unironically.
Dude, seriously. This is the most mundane fucking interaction if you live here. Oh shit, two different races interacting!?
Yesterday evening while having a smoke outside a bar I saw a black dude rush up to a car and knock on the window as it stopped at a stop light, point to the back, and then close the white driver's trunk because it was open as she came to a stop 50th and 9th. I could have totally cashed in on a "carjacking gone right!" video I guess?
Yeah or most cities in North America...
pretty much any city in the world that has a metro link
it’s amazing how gaga reddit goes over brown people. who knew they’re people just like us!
It’s photo of people of different ethnicities briefly interacting. Is this actually unusual for most people on reddit?
Pretty sure that is the Dubai metro.
Sorry, the only thing I can think about with NYC public transit is crazy guys berating and beating the shit out of mannequins or bedbugs.
The awesome thing is that most people are pretty cool and open to stuff like this in everyday life all the time.
You wouldn't think it from the media but yeah, this is normal. It's a shame everything has to be shocking and depressing and polarising when most people are just getting along and thinking babies are cute
I don’t know about that. My dad comes from a culture where everybody is a family, they take “it takes a village to raise a kid” quite literally. But now that he’s in North America, whenever he shakes kids hands or smiles and waves the parents always look confused. It’s kind of sad when he’s just a friendly old man.
I bet a lot of people are visibly taken aback by that sort of friendliness just because they're not used to it, but genuinely appreciate it.
Because babies. They unite us.
Both with their screams and their cuteness
And the stinky diapers... Yeah - try being stuck on a 3-hour flight with one of those parents who refuses to change the child, despite numerous subtle suggestions by the flight attendants as to the location of the restrooms.
Do they believe changing diapers cause autism ?
I don't know. I sat there with the other passengers, with no way to vent away that horrible smell. The flight attendants tried multiple times to get the mother to take the child to a changing area; you could tell by her responses that she knew why they were trying to suggest she go. But she overly-cheerily tried to seem oblivious why the suggestions were necessary. God - it was miserable!
I'm gonna guess she forgot to pack diapers into her carry on. There's no other sane reason to refuse, especially being at ground 0. Doesn't matter how many diapers you change, you never get used to the smell.
I think I would feel more sympathy for the baby. That would be sad and uncomfortable to sit in your own filth for 3 hours.
You'd think a baby would cry over that - the baby didn't cry. I could see his/her little face a couple rows ahead. The baby was all googly and cooing. Still - stinky. :-)
Maybe the reason why the mom didn’t get up was because she pooped her pants?
I was five minutes too late to present this theory
Yeah I guess some babies just don’t give a shit
Neither of my kids have ever cried over poopy nappies. They just don’t seem to care at all. It’s weird and not what I expected.
Baby skin got used to the poop. Great parenting.
One of the nicest thing about being a new father is the genuine smiles I'm getting from people. All sorts of people, too, transcending age and race. The presence of a baby just makes people happy.
Carrying a baby through town is great! People smile, doors get politely opened for you, chairs magically materialise whenever you are waiting for something, etc.
No matter our race, religion and beliefs, I think we all can appreciate a cute baby.
Or a great pair of shoes.
I still have my slip-on version of those shoes from 2009, because they have a little story behind them. When I was 15, I accidentally stole them, because the dudes working at the store were wasted and gave me the wrong box (which was supposed to have my old shoes in it, since I decided to wear the new pair). The workers there were always drunk as hell cuz the cash desk doubled as a bar, and adults even got a free shot if they spent over $100. I noticed the shoes when I got outside, and I was an asshole 15 year old... So I kept them. Thanks for reading my useless story about a pair of shoes.
Or seating room on the subway.
Oh god this. I would normally capitalize, but a just and fair god wouldn't let me land in Taipei with my bag missing. For those unaware, in America to go through security you have to remove your shoes. To save time I normally go through with slippers or slides and pack my shoes in my bag. I switch in the taxi after gathering my luggage. To get to Kenting from Taipei is a trip. I had to walk for the entire day in house shoes since not a single budding entrepreneur decided to sell shoes at the train station. Wearing the same pants for three days had nothing on wearing the same slippers for two.
Or a great pair of tits.
Is that what all these unnecessarily heartfelt comments are about? Because there are two different colors of people interacting? Holy shit, is it 1952 Alabama in here all of a sudden? Why are so many people acting racist like this is a big deal?
Thank you! I was thinking the same thing! Maybe I'm blind to the amount of racism going on, (I realize it's an issue) but this looks like an everyday interaction where I'm from lol Honestly sitting across from them I would never think to take a pic, I would think the kids interacting were cute but it would look like a couple humans interacting. Not a oh wow look at the difference races interacting! So wholesome!
Edit: I couldn't figure out why the pic was so upvoted till I saw the comments
That would be the appropriate reaction because you are not racist. I can appreciate simple ignorance for people who simply live in small communities where they literally hardly ever see anybody of a different color, but I'd think in this day and age with the internet people should understand that races live in harmony everywhere 99.9999% of the time. This post is super ignorant. But that said, it's also just a repost from years ago for karma. It's just the easily manipulated masses which the media makes so much money from giving karma to a karma whore.
As an Indian guy who grew up with Indian parents like that, yah most people have always been really polite and gracious. It isnice to see the usually grumpy Indian dad all smiley, but even that's not all that rare-- in Indian culture the three things a man is allowed to get excited about are food, cricket, and his children. I'll just go ahead and appreciate the niceness of it
Kids are good people.
Some kids are terrible.
I work at a school, can confirm. Most of them are pretty sweet tho.
Sadly yes, but they are products of their parents and surrounding. That's why it's important you have them grow up in a healthy environment
Children are innocent
Until my 1 year old son tries to claws my eyes out.
My son is 8 months and I swear he's trying to murder me, his hands are just too small.
A few are little devildroids
Idk if it’s just me but at first I didn’t even get why this picture got so many upvotes then I realised it’s because they’re both ethnically different. I don’t know why people still care about what background or race you come from we’re all the same species and that’s all that matters.
I’m completely with you, reddit posts are usually overwhelmingly “wow so diverse, so ethnic”, but I think this pic is great because of the little girl’s visceral reaction to seeing a baby
Reddit likes a photo, "ugh you only like it because they are ethnic"
Reddit downvotes a photo. "Ugh you only downvote it because they are ethnic"
Why don't you just set fire to all of reddit or STFU and let people enjoy stuff.
Little girls with short hair is so cute and so underappreciated
This photo makes my heart melt and my faith grow. Humanity is alive, and well. Don’t let the media convince you otherwise. We just need to spread more positive vibes and suppress the negative.
I have been touring some cities of Europe for the last three weeks. It's my first trip out of my country. My perspective of the humanity has changed. I'm Latinamerican and they always told me that Europeans are cold and selfish and whatnot. People is beautiful. We asked for directions and everyone was fully committed to help us with the best attitude ever. Everyone told me that Parisians hate you if you speak English. I love Parisians. Such gentle and kind people. Yes there are assholes here and there, but the vast majority of people is lovely.
Thank you for your positive mindset. More often than not on reddit you come across people who visited your place or some other, who then proceed to trash talk it and generalise without any nuance or cultural context in the light of their anecdotal experience, which is obviously absolute. There are up and downsides to every place and the way you approach it, finding a balance and not obsessing over petty stuff, will also contribute to the quality of your experience
It's mostly a myth, I've had nothing but positive experiences every time I've been to France.
i think this is a joke but i cannot tell
This is the sweetest thing I’ve seen all day. What an awesome photo!
non whites and whites interaction? to the top it goes!
rofl this infantalizing fucking nonsense that always gets posted to this sub is basically like saying "LOOK, THEY'RE JUST LIKE PEOPLE TOO!"
Okay someone else sees it? Thank you.
I thought I was going absolutely insane. What the fuck has happened to this sub, and what kind of weird fucking human beings post shit like this.
This happens constantly. There's this photo that gets reposted of an old white man helping to tie a young black man's tie that always reaches the front page. If they were both white nobody would give a shit.
This sub is going to shit. If it’s not this it’s a cancer post.
I don't get it, it's nice, but it's just people smiling at each other, I see this all the time...what am I missing?
Well, I don’t want to come off as crazy, but I’m pretty sure it is trying to make people feel good about themselves if they upvote a “brown” person smiling at a “white” person... again, call me crazy, but this picture is 100% meh, but will get upvotes, and people patting themselves on the backs for doing so.
Also, me saying this will get downvoted because it does not give the obligatory pats that, I guess, are expected?
You just explained all of reddit
Clicked into this picture just scrolling by, had to stare for a second to understand.
What, the girl? Oh, the baby? Oh, wait...it's because one of them is 'brown' colored, and one is 'white' colored, and they're smiling- ahhhh, is that a headscarf? A-ha, that's why this photo's all the way up here. And all the comments about how profound this picture is...
I don't know, maybe it's that I was raised somewhere somewhat diverse? I grew up colorblind, and wish I still could be. This picture SHOULD just be a mundane, average picture of a couple of kids. This is just how kids are. They're cute, they like younger kids.
But everyone is obsessed with their groups, with what color peoples skin is, etc. You guys should take some time to consider that hanging up on shit like skin color or style of dress is the first step to division along racial lines.
Yep yep. The point of this picture is the dichotomy between the two groups. This picture is otherwise remarkably mundane.
If you mention such, you get called out and are suddenly racist. People really don't care if there's a picture with brown people, just when they're the focus of a picture because they're brown for bonus woke points is when it's an issue.
Racism obviously ended in the 60s
Bruh. I live in a diverse metropolis but it's easy to tell what the focus of this picture is.
You're just tryna show how "color blind" you are when it comes to race.
I'm not any more, is my point :( I've been conditioned to look for things like race, religion, gender, etc in news and art. I hate it, and I wish we all could drop it.
I don't live in a metropolis, so, I mean, are things different there? Here in the burbs kids always interact, especially around this age difference. I see scenes like this almost every single time there are two kids sharing any kind of space.
Took me a while to figure out what was "special" about it too. Maybe don't just accuse people of lying because you didn't think the same thing.
2000: "I'm not racist, I have a black friend!"
2019: "I'm not racist, I upvoted a picture of a minority on Reddit"
This is a repost smh
Dozens of times since at least 2017! search-tweet/Happy+4th+of+July - First found on Jul 03, 2017 https://www.tineye.com/search/81a7c835d996a229fd705b6ef154fabbdf619fdf?sort=crawl_date&order=asc
This should be a forum to post new pictures you took yourself, not some recycled content for karma.
"Look Muhammad, these are the natives we're displacing! Someday, you'll fake a hate crime against them. Say hello before they're gone!"
That's because american media focuses on race too fucking much with all of their race baiting news stories. This is why so many americans are hyper focused on race.
This is why so many americans are hyper focused on race.
I think America's history of poor race relations is a bigger reason why people are so fixated on race and racism. If you see the way the government institutions like the CIA tried to destroy poor black communities, and the way the FBI treated civil rights leaders like MLK, it's pretty obvious why people aren't waking up the next day and going on like everything's fine, especially because segregation and racism has had a generational impact.
I notice a lot of "woke" people are lowkey racist.
Like being kind to non white people is something that earns you gold stars or something.
Did you really think this pic of two kids smiling at each other got to 13k just because? Or are you low key virtue signaling?
Look, I'm with you in that we should stop focusing on race. And that's precisely why this post annoys me, not the comments. It's a remainder that for most people, a (somewhat well done, I'll give that) picture of a brown and white family interacting is extraordinary enough that it needs attention. If you really Don't See ColourTM , this is just a very average picture.
Love that the dad here just went to town at the U.S. Polo Assn. store.
That is most likely her grandfather. His attire says that they are from the Indian subcontinent and its very uncommon to have a daughter so young at this age. Also, they usually send their kids to USA/Canada to study and its very normal for them to settle there and start a family and bring their parents over. I am only assuming but I’d put my money on the man being her granddad.
That's what father and son said.. Mother, far right... Earpods: "My momma talkin' to me tryna to tell me how to live..."
Dogs and babies. They just don't know anything apart from finding each other cute.
I was gonna say cats too but then I looked at my knee. Fuck you Lily.
This looks like my relatives on the N/ W. I had to doublecheck.
thats fucked up.
who wears lace up checkered vans? wtf
(Don’t) mind the gap
Re re repost. Still a great pic tho!
It ain't Ralph tho
CHILDRENS R ARE FUTUR.
I don't get it. What's so adorable in this picture? Is this a race thing? Because if it's just the baby than this stuff happens 24/7, so what's the deal here?
THIS ENDED RACISM
She looks like she wants to eat it
wow this image really says a lot about our society
Sorry your lovely image was hijacked, OP, gave me the smile of the day, thanks.
What the fuck is this shit?
A subway pic and nobody is looking at their phone.
Okay that’s cool that two kids are looking at each other but this isn’t an inherently interesting photo, nor is it well taken.
This sub has gone to utter horseshit. Like I’m so glad that white liberals have r/pics so that they can pat themselves on the back about how not racist they are, but they should call this subreddit something else if this is what it’s going to be.
Look, every subreddit is gonna have garbage posted to it, but it should be downvoted and left to die in New, not upvoted to the very top.
Someone in the comments please tell me how to block a subreddits posts from your ‘Popular’ feed because this is getting outrageous.
Oh fuck off we get it multiculturalism wooo!!
Brown bearded man likes baby. Redditors mind blown. This is a fucking mundane, everyday occurrence. The fact that this is on the front page is fukng sad.
It's almost as if brown people are humans just like us!
Post this shit on facebook, not reddit.
LOOK AT THIS MOMENT OF DIVERSITY, YOU BIGOT.
