GOOD. Freedom of speech is one thing, perpetuating false information for personal gain or platform is considerably different. Hope they put the screws to him
ELI5 how it's considerably different?
You can’t lie about people publicly, causing them harm.
Saying mr so and so is faking it and lying about his child being murdered, thus (knowingly) inspiring your nutcase followers to harass and abuse mr so and so is very different from saying, “I don’t like king George” or reporting on the many failures of our current commander in chief.
In short, freedom of speech is not freedom to lie.
Ah okay, I didn't consider the concept of defamation.
He was slandering them, that's not allowed.
The umbrella term "defamation" includes both libel and slander. Defamation is a statement that may harm someone's reputation. If it is written down, it's called "libel" whereas if it's spoken, it's called "slander."
Defamation law attempts to balance the freedom of speech and open exchange of ideas without giving someone permission to run around spreading lies about another that may harm his or her reputation, ability to earn a living, etc. Note that the expression of an opinion can never be actionable as defamation; statements must be presented as fact to be considered defamation.
Thank you for that, like i said in response to another reply I hadn't considered Defamation.
