Funny thing is that the creator says they are marching bears not dancing. He may be on to something.
If you’ve ever been to a dead or furthur show, this is exactly how deadheads dance.
I saw 130+ with Jerry from 85 to 95
I went to 6 shows from 91-94.
I can't imagine having seen 130. You must have been one comitted deadhead.
I was young and had a great paying gig asa a roller rink dj. $10 an hour in 1985 aint too bad. By 95 I was a club dj. Great pay and easy to get shifts covered. The main reason is I lived in Bay Area 88-95. That meant a possible 20+ show a year by car. I was spoiled.
I watched this gif twice.
Damn, way to ride the crest at the height of our civilization.
I can't accurately remember how many shows I got into, but I can say it was far fewer than the number of parking lots I got into. Wink
I went to 1. Awesome experience. I never knew hippies still existed at that time. Most of them must have dedicated their lives to traveling from show to show selling their food and stuff before the show.
I saw the last show he ever did in Atlanta, the only GD show I'd ever been to. Was a great show. He did this one slow, sort of sad song that I didn't know and I thought it was just beautiful. I have no idea what that song was, but my memory of him singing that is my biggest takeaway from the show.
He's Gone. 03/30/1995. The last show Dead in Atlanta. https://archive.org/details/gd1995-03-30.sbd.miller.119786.flac16/gd95-03-30d2t05.flac
Super jealous, I’ve only ever seen them as furthur a few times. But every time it was a blast. Especially when they played Dark Star never considered myself a dead head but def enjoy jam bands
Can you recommend a few? I know and love most of the Dead's most popular stuff but I could never get into Phish
Phish are kinda hard to get into. Especially if youre not big into jam/dance music already. My recommendation is to see jam bands live. Doesnt really matter which ones. The live experience is much more fun, and youre more likely to "get it."
I personally love to see cheaper acts. Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, The Werks, Perpetual Groove, Spafford, Twiddle, etc. And then there are the bigger names like Umphreys McGee, Widespread Panic, moe., and of course Phish and Dead and Co.
Cool, I'll make a playlist and check em out thanks. I'm in Germany, don't think there's much of a jam scene in my area unfortunately.
However I have my Spotify account hooked up to a ticket seller, so I get notifications when bands I follow announce tours in my area.
Ahh yeah. It may be a bit harder to find stuff around germany, but keep your eye out. If you do find anything, ask around the crowd. Most people would be more than happy to let you know about the local scene
Good idea cheers. One band I got into lately is The Simpkin Project. They're more reggae really but there are definitely some elements of jam in there.
Sweet. I may have to check them out. Jam isnt really a genre per se, but more of a performance style. There are loads of bands that jam at least a little when they play live. Its just hard sometimes to know without seeing them first
Allman brothers for one. Dave Matthews band. Rusted root is pretty cool. Derek Trucks band
Haha they've all been coming up on my Spotify song radio list. Never heard of Rusted Root before though, will check em out, thanks!
If you don’t like Phish try Trey Anatasio Band. It’s a little less chaotic then Phish and has horns but you still get Trey guitar
Try Umphreys Mcgee if u enjoy some heavier/prog rock jam stuff. Their live and studio work covers most musical genres out there. Going to see them on the 25-26th this month in Milwaukee Wisconsin.
Two Words. Widespread panic. Start Wth their love album, panic in the streets(on Spotify).
Depends on LSD or not
This isn't a record, it's a slipmat. There is no audio on this. I doubt it's even vinyl.
That's just them playing "Seastones" with Ned.
Could you imagine having to wait through seastones just to get to see the rest of the show you bought a ticket for? Wtf I would've been kinda pissed
All you need to do is say that it was made by some underground powernoise guy and they'll sell like hotcakes.
The pierced middle with cardboard sticking up confirms that.
To be fair, i get plenty of new vinyls that have extra label material/plastic sticking up off them from the pressing process.
Well that was a fun conversation
Thank you. If I didn't see this comment I would have never noticed the chain below.
Collective nouns often have something called "countification" done to them. Beer is a collective noun (he drank a lot of beer not "beers"), buuuut countification is the reason you can order "two beers" at a bar and don't have to say "bottles of beer".
"Beers" is the same type of word as "Vinyls", a pluralization of a collective noun that is used to indicate more than one. So, "Vinyls" is not ALWAYS wrong, and it is indeed a word, but it also is not ALWAYS correct.
Huh.... Thank you for the level headed, well explained answer. I can get that. It's just that "vinyls" sounds wrong to me, and it was probably reenforced by r/vinyl constantly correcting people on it. It's probably best to just leave it alone then if someone says vinyls.
Yeah no problem, I'm a grammar nerd and you got me to look up a bunch of stuff on this topic because it was interesting! In my understanding, I'm pretty sure THIS instance "plenty of new vinyls" is OK, (where vinyl would also be correct with a slightly different implication), but something like "I have a large collection of Vinyl" makes more sense without the 's'.
Except that literally every single vinyl collector on Earth refers to them as vinyls.
Edit: this is a really intriguing thread. I have been listening to vinyls my entire life — born in 80s and when I was a teen in the 90s , continued to purchase music such as Pearl Jam and Nirvana on Vinyl. I have been to every single record store in my city, spend 100s of hours flipping thru records, I have probably 3000 records in storage and in my house.
That being said, I have never once heard of this debate and I have heard the word “vinyls” used by everyone of my friends, my parents, and fellow collectors.
The only place I’ve ever heard of this debate, no surprise, is here on Reddit. Which I think says a lot about it’s validity. Reddit loves to gatekeep and this sounds like just another badge to add to the gate keeping culture.
I’ll concede in that, since I didn’t know about the debate in the first place, I’m obviously wrong to assume that “vinyls” is an accepted word or not. But, I think it’s pretty safe to assume the only people hung up on this are Redditors who have rallied around this gatekeeping opportunity as they do with so many other things.
Continue to keep the schooling coming my way, I’ll read the comments while listening to my vinyls.
No they don't. This is completely incorrect.
Except you don't actually know every "vinyls" collector on earth. I just say records, dude.
No they don’t.
And you would only get the animation effect by looking at it through a camera or under a strobe light. (Sorry if this was already pointed out...)
*Thankful Dead, Yare Yare.
They're thankful, because at least half their name is still intact, unlike Zipper Man
Damn, zipper man sounds like some crappy 60's American comic character. This translation is horrible
Oh, a fellow man of culture
You could take hallucinogens and get the same effect.
or take hallucinogens before watching for double the effect!
Or cancel it out
I seem to remember seeing some hallucinogens with the dancing bear on them back in the early 80’s. Strangely enough, the people who had them were deadheads! Coincidence?
Nah it's a popular blotter print precisely because of the famous relationship the Grateful Dead had with LSD
I saw the same design 3 years ago
I have 100% seen these bears march on one of those spiral tie dyes Walmart used to sell...
more animated records on instagram here: @drewtetz
and yes! you need a camera to view the effect. a strobe light at 30hz also works. more viewing info on phenakistoscopes here.
I was saying to myself "if this isnt set to "Truckin'" it better be set to "China Cat Sunflower"." Was not disappointed.
Dave’s not here, man.
Where can I get this? My moms Birthday is coming up in March and I would love to get this for her. She would absolutely love it.
You need a strobe light set to proper frequency or view it through a camera with the proper frame rate.
Grateful dead had the best marketing material of all time. All their shit looks so fucking cool.
Did a three show tour with "The Dead" (RIP Jerry) in 2004. Framed all the tickets, pictures, and odds and ends I got from those shows.
I was raised on The Grateful Dead, got to see the (nearly) Grateful Dead for three excellent Summer shows, and love the hell out of this band.
This is so cool and thanks for sharing.
My eyes. Fk.
Melody's Echo Chamber's Bon Voyage came with something like this in the vinyl but my friend and I couldn't get it to work like this
hey, i did that one, too! Melody is so cool.
i'm sorry to hear that you couldn't get the record working. i wrote some troubleshooting tips here that might help; the biggest thing is almost always getting enough light, so if you have any extra bright direct light sources you can shine on the record that should get you up to speed hopefully!
I'll tell my friend next time I'm over. It's a beautiful record all on its own definitely one of my favorite albums right now. We tried with a phone flashlight and another phone filming but I'm not willing to give up!
Finally, a legit reason to return to vinyl.
Everybody’s dancing in a ring around the sun...
This actually manages to capture how some of my trips have felt.
I need this.
And the milking of the fans continues.
Remember when they were playing the last tour?
Pepperidge Farm remembers!
Sweet little Owsley Bears ❤❤❤
Great. Now the flashbacks start. There goes the day.
I need this
This is physics. Funny phenomenon
Not really physics. More like computer engineering.
The camera is sampling images at a fixed frequency. If you tune the speed of that spinny thing to match the frequency (or tune the sampling rate if you can), you see the bears moving in their place.
oh boy. that could have an effect.....
ELI5 Why do the little images meld together just because it spins faster? Why don't we keep seeing a blurry mush of colors even as it spins? Is it just our brains doing that "this doesn't make sense, i'll fill in the blanks" thing?
it's mostly due to the frame rate of the camera!
the camera is capturing frames at a constant rate. the yellow/orange bears appear fixed in place because they are exactly the right number of frames for the speed of the turntable to sync with the speed of the camera's shutter.
if you increase the number of frames in the ring that makes up the animation, the bears will appear to move forward due to being a slightly "slower" loop. (the same with decreasing the frames to move backwards.) this is why some appear to be "walking" while others march in place.
hope that makes sense!
It does actually. Thanks! But if you look at it without a camera, you'd just see blurry figures? Unless you stared at a specific spot?
So does it not work in real life? Only on camera?
I know people who would die for this.
does anyone have a picture of it still?
I was very little, maybe in the late 70s or early 80s. But there was a record that had an animation on it, it repeated of course. I just remember watching it on our 6 ft long and 3 ft high stereo system. I keep thinking it was a Disney one. Parents don't remember, but it could of been picked up at Disney back then.
There's a dot that appears next to the green one a few times.
what do you want from me
Listening to “don’t stop me now” by Queen and it just goes so well with it
I must have taken too many drugs in my life because the bears aren't danc... No wait, I just have shitty wifi... Ok there we go.
Losing my fucking mind right now.
Does this work when you're looking at it in person? Or can you just see it because of the shutter on the camera?
You could sync up a strobe light to get the effect irl.
Nice! A zoetrope.
Listening to "The Furious" by Bloody Beetroots while watching this is some phantasia shit
This should be on whoadude
Last time I check, none of my vinyls had a paper punch through the center.
Had lsd that was apparently made using the grateful deads personal cooks recipe Owsley Stanley aka bear and let me tell you it was wicked stuff definitely clear your schedule
At school my friend once asked this deadhead, "If Jerry Garcia was here right now, would you blow him?" Dude's like, " Of course, man". Laughed our butts off at this guy who didn't even get it. It was 1978. Never got the Dead, but was surrounded by heads. Still cringe at the thought of listening to those God awful bootleg tapes. To each his own!
Proof that the human eye can only see 30 FPS /s
Posted on the day of the new jojo episode too hmm
I got high just looking at that
ON THE FRONT PAGE! heck yeah my man. This looks so clean and those colours pop.
Looks like a shroom trip
Just watching this is making me age exponentially
I feel like at some point i'm gonna wake up in the middle of the night and see these bears climbing onto my bed.
When the tabs kick in.
I need this record!!! What release is this?!?
Anyone else getting an Akira vibe?
Done! Give me back
I was there at deer creek back in 1995. I think it was June maybe July, but Jerry was still alive.
Where did you get this slipmat? If it is one.
This...this broke me.
Man, even their records give you a contact high.
I think that OP gave me some really bad acid, maybe really good acid. 🤔
To further enhance my "get high" attitude will save this and watch this later.... After I get high
This makes me feel old......
I think you mean “Thankful Death”
This inspires me to create one for myself and satisfy my curiosity,if it works
i'll take 2 acids pls
Awesome, don’t need any acid for this one
Lol this came up as I’m listening to Dead & CO’s show in Mexico last year.
How do you see this in real life? A strobe light?
It's a slip mat, not music
It's a mat that vinyl sits on, not a record itself. It also does not have any effect with the naked eye so you wouldn't see the bears walking in person
Something about this makes me feel uneasy.
I feel spun!
「THE GRATEFUL DEAD」
They have the coolest visual iconography for the shittiest music ever.
