Creates a new world of potential for catfishing.
Porn could get interesting.
Could lead to all sorts of ethical dilemmas like "is this hot teen generated by a computer 19 or 16?"
In the future you probably could upload a picture of your friends mom to a online neutral network A.I and it can generate a porn video for you within a day.
Kinda already can do that.
Especially if it's OP's mom. Just head over to her house with a steak coupon and a camera, and she's good to go.
Yeah, she’s great. She even let me keep the coupon.
Hell, she even gave me a stamp card. Apparently she’s doing a 5 for 1 deal
If you use a set of pictures with people who are legal age but look younger to generate an image, then as a hypothetical if that picture was identical to a image generated from pictures of people who were not legal age but looked older, would one of those pictures be illegal and one of them illegal? Both would be of a person who don't exist, but the "source" of one would be illegal.
Screw Plato, this is going to be the golden age of philosophy.
Actors and models will be obsolete as all porn becomes cgi
Won’t that just spawn a bunch of porn snobs looking for pure, artisanal amateur?
Kinda like how machines can make thousands of extremely accurate watches each day, but people pay hundreds of thousands to have some Swiss dude make one from scratch with his own hands
Correct. There's a certain price that people will always pay for "nature" of the sorts. E.g: organic foods. They will be shifted to the high end niche, but as for mass-production, the machines always prevail.
Did you miss the deepfakes fiasco? It's already getting interesting.
Plot twist - they're all real people. Nvidia's AI is so advanced that it realised that cheating and downloading a load of random faces from google image search was easier than doing it properly.
Imagine looking at this and seeing your own face.
'Wait, I'm not real?'
There's one in there that looks eerily like me... bit freaky.
Edit: cool, I like talking to people here about this! To narrow it down, I most closely match one of the smallest pictures. You know how faces stand out to you way more if you know them already? Well this tiny face stood out immediately.
Me too. I'm tempted to switch out my profile pic and see if anyone notices.
Sorry, you both don't exist, hate to break it to you
just more proof of the whole "we live in a simulation" theory
Dude, why are you talking to yourself? There's no one there.
Who are you talking to?
Can we do one of those super cool reddit things, where we get this to the front page and see who most matches these faces? Someone has to be close to one of these pics, right?
I'm here from the front page. I don't see any that look like you though. Turn the light on. I can't see you well through the window.
The guy in the bottom left looks identical to the guy who sits next to me in Calc. Have I been imagining him this whole time? Now that I think of it, I’ve never seen him interact with anyone else...
Future episode of Black Mirror
Doesn’t look like anything to me
I don't remember this episode of black mirror
yesterday i watched a movie called Upgrade, it felt like a 90 minute BM episode
this is actually kind of scary
Seriously. They all look really real to me. It's creepy that they don't look creepy.
Yeah it's like they're so far past the uncanny valley that it almost makes it worse
In addition to being flawless, right down to the inclusion of flaws, they all have quirky expressions that imply an underlying personality. You feel like you know them a little just by looking at them.
I imagine that realistic movement is next.
Then porn would get really interesting.
the waifus just got upgraded.
The ununcanny valley.
I remember when I was much younger, we had some ideas of what computers could accomplish back then, but it was still early days relatively speaking. Not punchcard early days, no, but DOS prompt early days, PC early days...
We literally never imagined this was possible really. I mean, in super far-fetched sci-fi fantasy, sure, but in our own lifetimes? Extremely unlikely. It was just fiction, like flying cars and space aliens and transporters and all that jazz.
Had you asked if a computer could do this in 30 years, we would say no, and wouldn't understand why you'd want them to. I'm still not quite sure why that is, living in the present, but here it is all the same.
This is a surprise, a very unwelcome one. The pace is accelerating far past what we thought it would be like. Even if we don't have full AI and cyborgs yet, I can no longer say with any certainty that it won't happen in my lifetime. Actually, I would have to say it will.
I am extremely, extremely uneasy at that thought. I do not trust our species with this technology. I trust our creations with it less.
To say the least, we are not designed well to handle this coming reality.
Yeah I love technology, but I said "I don't like it" about as quickly as I did when watching Boston Dynamics' Big Dog walking and looking like 2 people moving furniture.
Kind of? I'm worried.
Can anyone elaborate here? I assume the backround and the heads themselves are from actual photos.
Then the faces themselves are switched out. Much like a Snapchat face swap. But the faces that are swapped are generated by the neural network?
Or is the entire photo, pixel by pixel, generated?
The latter, I work with GANs as my day job.
Edit: pixel by pixel is not really the way to think about GANs either, you sample the entire generated image all at once. There are networks that generate images pixel by pixel, just not this particular network.
The entire photos are generated pixel by pixel, at least that's how its presented in their scientific paper
Pixel by pixel, completely fabricated based on millions and millions of real images of humans. The scary part is that we can now create images (and videos) that are impossible to tell apart from reality. We already live in a world where many images are more real to us than real things (you haven't seen most of the things you've seen online in real life)... the lines between what is real and what's not are eroding more and more and the ability of bad actors to bend reality and falsely influence people is stronger than ever.
Yeah... we are probably only a few years away from 100% realistic cgi, at which point we won't be able to trust video any more as evidence that something actually happened. Imagine video evidence not being a thing any more It's like we invented ourselves out of an invention.
Yup. Society is already being conditioned to not believe what we see. There will be no objective truth soon enough
Plus this is just more proof that we really could already be in a simulation
Oh god the attempts at creating cats are freakin' hilarious!
Oh my god I'm gonna have nightmares now thanks for making them larger I hate it
That's what cats really look like. They just use illusion magic to charm us into seeing them differently.
There's a literal 2012 cat meme using impact font in there, this has a lot to say about the state of the internet
That one has a very strangely formed cat in it tho. There’re a few without mouths and one looks like a mutated arm like tentacle with a face in the middle of its oversized forearm bit which seems more like an issue with the ai IMO.
Yeah its very malformed, but its the attempt that counts. That A.I., in a way, set out to make its own dead meme
The gibberish caption makes it eery as heck though.
What if it actually said something meaningful and there wasn't any Nvidia bamboozle!
Does anyone notice the super creepy face in the photos of the cats that looks absolutely nothing like a cat and instead a deformed creepy ass human?
Theres also one that appears to be wearing bread
I’m not getting hilarious, I’m getting a range from “mildly upsetting” to “instills a deep sensation of terror”
Oh god the attempts at creating cats are freakin'
The cats look like clones gone wrong
I want to browse all their resulting cat pictures! I love how weird some of them are
I wish the cat images were higher resolution. I want to see them in detail. Some of them look deformed, and some are just a little off in some way. I was disappointed that I couldn't enlarge the images.
Some of those cats are pure nightmare fuel.
So... anyone want to scoot this tech over to Bethesda “There’s only 12 faces” Softworks?
Wait until they find out that there's more than 4 voices.
Yeah, but they all still say the exact same 4 lines of dialogue, right? Wouldn't want to go crazy with changes or anything.
You never should have come here!
Have you heard of the high elves?
Still pretty crazy that the only way you can become the town guard is by being a former adventurer who took an arrow to the knee.
Sometimes i hear voices from Skyrim in other places and it's just... wrong. "This ain't you. You're fifty other dudes, but not this guy!"
It was the opposite for me. I recognized Michael Hogan (general tullius) immediately from Battlestar Galactica.
And Jim Cummings is like three of them
What always blew me away was that they had a half dozen different voice actors record the exact same lines.
Things like that make me feel they contracted an outside company and gave them a specific task.
If you were involved in the development, I can't imagine you would duplicate lines like that...
Can't, the engine would catch on fire bolting something that advanced to it. It barely chugs with multiplayer.
Like trying to load and fire a 20mm round from a Walmart BB gun.
I realize your joking, but it'd be pretty cool to spin this tech to rendering faces that games can use as static assets. Double since my understanding of the way these things work means they're really resource intensive (have one neural net generate a bunch of faces, and another filter out the ones that don't look "face-y" enough)
Even cooler if someone managed to make these return faces based on a description. Probably shave man-decades off the total effort expended in triple a game development
To state the obvious it's much more difficult to have a 3D model of a face than a 2D photo.
You ever wake up one day, look at some small scale news report and just have your mouth drop cause you're living in the future? After virgin galactic's launch the other day, and now this I'm hyped to see where we can go from here
This tech could eventually be used to generate nudes of people that don't exist.
you sure this isn't one of those "can you tell which is real or not?" things? a few of the pics appear to be clipped group photos
They're generated from a neural network that studies thousands and thousands of real photos and then creates original images from the patterns it detects. Because a lot of real photos include the clipped faces of friends, the generated images do too.
Here is a video explaining the process.
That’s crazy impressive. Even the transition between faces looks so smooth and perfect - like high end movie cgi.
Well, this is literally high-end CGI in movie format.
Pretty amazing, the only thing that looks off to me is how a lot of the faces have one big centered tooth like tom cruise
Because the training set contains cropped group photos.
Anyone else creeped out by this?
Yep, I get a really spooky feeling when I look into these peoples eyes and know they do not and did not ever exist.
Don't worry, as someone relatively familiar with neural networks, I can tell you any detectability from the eyes will be a flaw of the particular network structure or initialisation. With a few larger convolutional filters, the next version will easily capture and synthesise the appearance of a soul for you.
Ok great! Can't wait for that thread. o_O
This is actually really creepy.
I got a little Nauseous when I was looking at it. The implications of the ability to do this. The first thing that came to mind is coups or the conspiracy theories like sandy hook.. ppl Say that the photos of the victims are actors or otherwise not real/ photoshopped. Now I can’t say boo to that theory but you can’t deny that the tech is there to falsify any images of victims perpetrators incidences and coups. Any news story could be falsified with this ability. What is real any more and what is false
So how long until we start having bloody synths walking among us?
Only thing to do is fuse ourselves with the AI before it has a chance to kill us
The young woman in the top middle is the kindest looking person I’ve ever seen. But that’s probably just so that you’ll lower your guard for the robots when the machines become self aware.
Like Ex Machina.
This in the hands of game developers, awesome. This in the hands of politicians, terrifying.
This is actually kinda unsettling
Stock photo models hate this.
Is it just me or is anyone else really fucking unsettled by this
I'm getting a terrible sinking feeling at this and I don't know why.
Holly shit, I feel like for some reason this is very important, and that by the time I figure out why - it'll be too late...
This is disturbing
imagine looking at this and seeing yourself as one of them
This made me uncomfortable
What if this neural net is smart and lazy and just finds a face picture to display. “Yeah, I made up that face, want another? Here you go...” -neural net-
I worry constantly about the near future as deep fakes become better and better. How can any Western justice system manage to deal with a world in which physical evidence can simply be generated at will? Piss someone off, here’s a video of you kicking a baby, with audio of you admitting to other crimes as well. Hell, forget courts of law; this has the potential to be utterly devastating in the court of public opinion.
