"...which I am sure is an acquired addiction..."
Following the prophetic model of stating things you think sounds right and declaring it as truth, without any evidence whatsoever.
Fuck right off
He should have replaced the word homosexual with Mormon.
Edit: Has the audio been removed?
The talk titled Turning the Hearts was heavily edited. Big chunks of the talk are not in the text but are still in the audio.
He starts out by saying, “I consider it a great honor and a privilege to greet you this afternoon in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.” The bold part was edited out. Interesting.
At 1:21 (after the words “very serious attack today all over the world”), he rants about birth control and the destruction of families. About 53 seconds of the talk was cut out of the text.
At 2:24 (after the words “the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee”), another 24 seconds is missing from the text. He goes on about the destruction of families by “those who represent the so-called ‘alternate lifestyle’” and decries vasectomies. LOL.
At 4:58 (after the words “keep it from being ‘wasted’ when the Lord comes”), 28 seconds was edited out of the text. He said:
I have often wondered how or why the earth would be wasted if children’s hearts are not turned to their fathers. Today, it’s very clear for all to see. When the Lord comes, if He finds nothing but birth control, abortions, sterilizations, and homosexuals, the Earth is wasted.
At 6:46 (after the words “when they see what a great blessing they were to you,” which are different in the text for some reason), another 28 seconds was edited out of the text. He said:
If children have a happy family experience, they will not want to be homosexuals, which I am sure is an acquired addiction, just as drugs, alcohol, and pornography are. The promoters of homosexuality say they were born that way, but I do not believe this is true. There are no female spirits trapped in male bodies and vice versa. He who made them made them male and female. Every form of homosexuality is sin, said the living prophet Spencer W. Kimball.
And of course he’s equating homosexual with transgender. No, someone can be comfortable and confident as a man who happens to like men, or woman who likes women.
I looked up the talk after reading the article about his death and also saw that they had removed the offensive parts. Just fascinating. There's a Mark Petersen talk from the Sunday morning session that same April (1981) that has text but no video. I'm wondering what they cut out of that one!
Funnily enough I was raised by two incredibly loving people and had a very happy childhood-- I'm still gay as hell though.
How strange, same thing happened to me!
Addiction to drugs and alcohol can be cured.
There is no cure for stupidity.
A Friend of mine served in one of his missions. He called the guy Hartless Rectum Jr. I don't think he cared much for his old pres.
While a missionary in a European mission 50 years ago I had a one-on-one interview with this asshat. I was having some adjustment problems (language, different culture, almost total non-interest by the citizens.) Although I don't recall anything Rector said, I vividly remember is attitude of "I don't care how you feel, just get your ass out there and work" and "You have no business having any negative feelings." It was a total drill Sargent-like dress-down by a guy wearing a suit and supposedly representing the Lord. So, I still have no charity for this guy, even on hearing of his death.
I have heard so many stories of gay men in conversion therapies trying to uncover what happened in their childhood that made them gay. Many of them look back on extremely happy childhoods and home-lives with wonderful parent interactions, and have to dig really deep to find anything negative that might have “caused” their “same gender attraction.”
Mmmm, my jerk mormon dad loved that guy.
Harmon was a homophobe and an asshat.
For those wanting to learn more about the LGBT-Mormon intersection I would start on these Wikipedia pages:
May he burn in hell
He came to my mission. Was a complete asshole. I was TBM through and through and couldn't figure out how one of God's chosen could be such a complete jerk. Little did I realize that's a feature of Mormonism, not a bug.
Rector? Dang near killed her.
Rector was a Paul H Dunn wannabee.
Religion is the most addictive substance on Earth.
In the words of Curly Bill from Tombstone, “well...bye.”
Several years ago I had the opportunity to have dinner with Harmon at a friend of mines house. He was emeritus at the time. This is when I was a TBM. He was very bitter about changes the Church had made, eliminating the Lamanite adoption program, he was very critical of the Church's lack of promoting it's own K-12 education system especially in countries or states where the faith had a decent stronghold on the population. Wasn't that I agreed or disagreed with him, it was just odd hearing a former GA be critical of the brethren...BTW, Harmon was not a big fan of ET Benson.
He was a pretty well known GA back in the 70’s and 80’s! His book, which I thinkwas called, The Field is White and Ready to Harvest, was insane! Even my MP thought it was out there and stopped giving it out to missionaries.
When I left the church after coming out it used to make me sad when people said it had something to due with lack of faith - now the thing that makes me sad is when people think it has something to do with my amazing family. I hope nobody in my family thinks that I'm "their fault."
I met him a year ago. Was pleasantly demented at the time and I couldn’t bring myself to bring up any of his old stupid sayings over the pulpit.
TBF, most people of that era were completely wrong about LGBT.
If you live during an era of social progress it’s easy to fall victim to presentism. Let’s get get after people who are alive and should know better.
Maybe he had issues because he was called Rectum by bullies in grade school.
He showed up in Australia on my mission selling Joseph Smith coins. I think I still one somewhere.
Rector led an interesting life. As president of the San Diego Mission he organised for missionaries to baptise busloads of Mexicans. They were the highest baptising mission in the world. Im pretty sure this led to the basketball baptism era because he was put on a pedestal by the church.
He was also a "victim" of a ponzi scheme. He was used to attract investors into the scheme through his gravitas among Mormons. However it is likely he was getting kickbacks from the fraudulent investors who served time.
Rector used to love sitting on the front row of Rodney Meldrum Heartland conferences. I wonder if he was getting kickbacks from Meldrum?
Sure, he was a homophobe, but this is not the reason why. This is what many psychologists were saying at the time. The church leaders were just quoting what they heard. It took a long time for the church to start to change from this bad science. Now to stop being homophobic and misogynistic.
Hetero woman here.
Beaten with cuts and black eyes as a kid. Grounded for a year. Threatened with abandonment by my mom about a thousand times. Learning problems. Narcissist mother. Reassured that God couldn't love me by my primary teacher. ( I told her to go to hell, while my mom kept quiet ).
Im lucky that I'm alive, never mind one sexual orientation or another.
He will make for some nice worm food.
